Pineapple Tomatoes

Named for it's shape and not for it's flavour the pineapple tomato is one of the newer lines we have been selling over the last few years.

It is one of our more popular summer lines and takes it's name from the distinctive ribbing on the outside, reminiscent of a pineapple's textured exterior.

Aside from being a beautiful fruit which adds a wonderful colour to any summer dish, the pineapple tomato is delicately sweet and fruity and it's flesh is meaty with few seeds.

Sliced it reveals a mottled yellow and red-coloured interior, which can be delicious served just drizzled with good olive oil and a pinch of sea salt alone.

Each tomato can grow to be up to 2lbs in weight - you will be safer holding one in two hands than just one!

Coeur de Boeuf Tomatoes

Mainly from France, and occasionally from Spain, these magnificent Coeur de Boeuf Tomatoes are currently coming from our growers in Brittany, Western France.

There is a steady demand all year round from the specialist buyer for these majestic fruits, which take their name from their shape, that of an ox's heart. The tomato ripens from the inside out, and therefore remains green for a fairly long time, even though it may be quite ripe enough inside to eat.

Not only does it have a special appearance, heavily ribbed on the outside , sometimes misshapen and ripening to a distinctive bright red, but it is also meaty with relatively little juice, and has a wonderful taste with moderate acidity.

It is perfect sliced thickly and laid out on a plate, seasoned with some black pepper and anchovies, and drizzled with olive oil - an easy tapas share plate.

Merinda Tomatoes

These are Merinda tomatoes, also known as a Sicilian heirloom tomato.

These stunning fruits are small, ribbed and have a wonderful firm almost crunchy texture. They are tart and taste of the Sicilian vines.

They're also best when they're not too large, and people generally eat them raw, finely sliced because they're thick-skinned, in salads or simply seasoned with olive oil, salt, and vinegar.

Green Zebra Tomatoes

Coming from Brittany in Western France these vibrant Green Zebra Tomatoes sell in similar quantities to the Coeur de Boeuf Tomatoes, and appeal to the more discerning buyer who is wanting something that little bit more special.

With their characteristic dark green and yellow stripes the variety was originally bred in Washington, USA, and stemmed from an idea that arose in the 1950s, when a traditional green tomato originally meant that it wasn’t ripe and was thrown out.

The challenge was to produce a green tomato that tasted great and these impressive beauties certainly do that. The flavour of the large green fruit is more tart than regular tomatoes, often described as spicy or even zingy.

Here at French Garden they only tend to be available during the warmer months.

French Black Potatoes

These Black Potatoes, also know as Vitelotte, are a gourmet variety of potato cultivated in France since the early 19th century.

Grown in France and available all year round, their skins are not actually black and they can vary in actual colour, from a deep purple-blue, to a purple-red. Inside they are a deep purple and retain their colour even when cooked.

Connoisseurs will know that they have a characteristic nutty flavour and a smell not unlike chestnuts.

They are medium in size and we sell them in five kilo boxes.

Italian restaurants in the UK cannot get enough of them and they are more popular with our customers today than ever before.

Beautiful to look at with their multi-coloured speckled skin these beans

French Tulameen Raspberries

Originally bred in Canada, Tulemeen Raspberries are now one of the world's most popular summer fruiting varieties.

A supermarket favourite - although don't let that put you off - the consistently large and excellent flavoured berries of the Tulameen Raspberry plant are bright and glossy and keep their distinctive conical shape well once picked.

They have a sweet aromatic flavour which needs no sugar or cream accompaniment and the taste is subtle yet rich, delicate and refreshing.

Did you know that growing the fruits can be a challenging process, the plants being very sensitive to winds and the fruits being highly susceptible to moisture?

Chasselas Grape

Surely there isn't another grape on the planet that looks as beautiful as the brown tinged Chasselas from the Moissac region in the South West of France.

Crisp, sweet and fragrantly flavoured, it is the high levels of sugar in the fruits that causes the delicate golden colour, and of course results in such wonderful flavours.

This variety pairs perfectly with charcuterie and melon and this grape, as well as the Muscatel, work well in salads or together with cheese.

Muscat Grape

They are characterised by their thick skin and small seeds and they are renowned for their very sweet flavour with rich earthy taste.
