Coeur de Boeuf Tomatoes
Mainly from France, and occasionally from Spain, these magnificent Coeur de Boeuf Tomatoes are currently coming from our growers in Brittany, Western France.
There is a steady demand all year round from the specialist buyer for these majestic fruits, which take their name from their shape, that of an ox's heart. The tomato ripens from the inside out, and therefore remains green for a fairly long time, even though it may be quite ripe enough inside to eat.
Not only does it have a special appearance, heavily ribbed on the outside , sometimes misshapen and ripening to a distinctive bright red, but it is also meaty with relatively little juice, and has a wonderful taste with moderate acidity.
It is perfect sliced thickly and laid out on a plate, seasoned with some black pepper and anchovies, and drizzled with olive oil - an easy tapas share plate.
