Aubergines

Aubergines

Aubergines are one of the mainstay products for our business.

It is native to South-East Asia, but today is grown all over the world and our current growers send ours over from Holland.

There are many different varieties of aubergine; we stock the classic bulbous, glossy, deep purple variety but just next door, French Garden Ltd sell ivory aubergines, hence the American name, "Eggplant."

Did you know? Although it is used as a vegetable, an aubergine is actually a fruit, a berry to be precise, and a species of nightshade?

English Runner Beans

English Runner Beans

There can be nothing more British than the first crop of runner beans and nothing more delicious than tucking into them during a light summer lunch.

Our Runner Beans have been sent down from our grower in Lincolnshire and they are quite simply excellent!
They started in mid-June and will continue well into the middle of August before petering out.

Did you know that runner beans were first introduced to Britain from the Americas in Tudor times, along with potatoes and tomatoes?

Today they are one of Britain’s most popular vegetables, although they were first grown here as ornamental climbers, and in most other parts of the world still are.
