Originating in Sicily and Spain but with one very old variety from China, the wonderfully sweet and beautifully coloured blood orange is unmistakeable once its ruby flesh is revealed.
The distinct colour is caused by pigments called anthocyanins but only develops once the fruit is exposed to cold conditions – either at night while growing or in cold storage after being picked. These pigments provide a higher level of antioxidants.
These are Italian and the quality is truly outstanding – really bloody, but not for the faint-hearted!
